Behind the scenes in Apia

Watching the Step Afrika performance outside the church at Moataa Village
There were so many events around Samoa's 50th Anniversary of Independence. Many of them ran for a long time. There was a skill to obtaining a good view that provided comfort, coolness, and easy escape.

The organizers of the events tried to think of every detail. Vast numbers of people had to be fed and watered during the main government celebrations. Still, dozens of school kids and other participants fainted in the heat of the day.

By the end of the day, this gentleman's shirtlessness was enviable.

And, well, just because I think it's a cool picture, this is on board the USS Chafee before a Shiprider Agreement was signed. The Chafee was in town for the celebrations. Amazingly, one of my colleagues "ran" into her cousin aboard the ship. Neither knew the other was in Samoa. A very wonderful reunion after seven years.
